Crimson petal and the white

What a great new mini series, in the form of this opulently dark and sordid drama from Director Mark Munden.  Based on the recent novel by Michel Faber and shot in, can I say, in 70s shallow focus with a breathy atmospheric soundtrack and strong female leads, it tells the story of a young prostitute, Sugar, in 1870s London dreaming of a better life and her journey as she’s taken in as a mistress.  Much of this work was filmed outside of London, Sugars slum world was re created in Manchester Town Hall and many scenes developed in an old brothel in Rochester.

More than  a costume drama,  brilliant production and starring Gillian Anderson, Romola Garai and Amanda Hale, it really is worth watching.

Crimson petal and the white.
